During the early morning hours of September 3, 2007, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for wires down as the result of a property damage vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway (State Route #24) near the intersection of Gull Point Road.
It was apparent that the electrical service within the Oak Orchard – Riverdale communities was temporarily out of service as a result of this incident. Upon arrival of the responding emergency apparatus, it was determined that a single vehicle (dark blue Chevrolet Pickup was traveling west on State Route #24), left the roadway and struck a utility pole causing the pole to snap in two leaving substantial debris in the roadway. The momentum of the pick up continued, causing a vehicle roll over condition which stopped in a thicket of small trees and underbrush.
Other vehicles traveling west on State Route #24, struck the telephone pole debris in the roadway (black and silver Ford Ranger pick up) causing severe damage to the left side and under carriage damage to the vehicle as well as rupturing the vehicle’s gasoline tank. The telephone debris was moved slightly out of the roadway after being struck by the Ford Ranger and was finally struck by a third vehicle (dark green Ford Focus) causing front end and right side damage to this vehicle.
State Route #24 was closed for the duration of the incident and the power company was able to restore the electric service in the area within two hours. The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company contacted the DNREC Emergency Response
Agency regarding the fuel spillage concern and assisted with traffic control during the incident. The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
