Large Crowd Sees Mortgage Burned on Sunday at River
On Sunday, October 21, 1956, at River Burning of the mortgage of the fire house of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company at Oak Orchard was witnessed by a large crowd Sunday afternoon in front of the building.
A truck, gaily decorated for the occasion, was the stage for the program at which Thomas Whitledge, President of the fire company, had a part in the actual burning of the mortgage.
Raymond M. Trice, Past President of the company, was the master of ceremonies and introduced the visitors including Governor J. Caleb Boggs.
The Women’s Auxiliary to the fire company served a luncheon after the ceremonies were held.
The Indian River Fire Company was organized in 1953 and the building was constructed in 1954. The mortgage of $6,500 and was cleared through a variety of special events including bakes, oyster roasts, and shooting matches.
