On Tuesday, January 2, 2006, at 8:45 p.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a serious motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival of Deputy Chief Brian Hubbs, it was determined to have a single vehicle versus a pole. The vehicle's occupant was extensively trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters made a valiant attempt at extricate the trapped occupant; however, he succumbed to his injuries before he could be removed. Indian River firefighters were in service for two hours and thirty one minutes. Indian Mission Road (State Route #5) was closed due to rescue efforts, repair of the pole, and investigation. The Delaware State Police are investigating.
