On Saturday evening, November 4, 2006, at approximately 10:16 p.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a motor vehicle collision on Long Neck Road at the intersection of Banks Road. Engine 80-5 arrived on location and began assisting emergency medical services (EMS) with patient triage, scene assessment and securing the vehicles involved. Once patient triage was completed, it was determined that six persons needed emergency medical services. This incident was then upgraded to a Level I Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). Four patients were transported to Beebe Medical Center via ground transportation units, one patient was airlifted and flown to Christiana Hospital, and the other person refused pre-hospital emergency medical attention. The Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company (Station #83) assisted with ground transportation and provided one ambulance. Additional fire units arriving on scene were directed to assist with the establishment of landing zone operations, additional patient care initiatives, and finished cleaning the roadway. The incident was placed under control by First Assistant Chief Ryan Mock at 10:56 p.m., and all responding units returned shortly thereafter. This incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Police.
