On Wednesday, March 22, 2005 at approximately 12:56 p.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a woods fire. While enroute, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) apprised responding units that the caller reported a small fire on the side of the road way with extensions into the woods. Upon arrival of emergency apparatus, a moderate size woods fire had developed. Due to the severely dry conditions, which were accompanied by a 25 mph wind with higher gusts, the fire spread rapidly and consumed approximately 60 acres of wooded land. Multiple companies (24) throughout the region responded and supplied various pieces of emergency apparatus and manpower to support the suppression of this incident.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company had forty-one firefighters in service for a period of seven hours and twenty-seven minutes. Other responding companies enhanced our compliment of fire suppression staffing to approximately 150 firefighters.

(Sta. 8), Pittsville, MD. (Sta 7), Sussex County Paramedics. Furthermore, the Delaware Forestry Service, Delaware State Fire Marshals Office, Delaware State Fire Police, the Delaware State Police and their Aviation Section provided additional assistance during the incident
