Sunday, March 5, 2006 proved to be a busy day for Indian River firefighters. At 10:35 a.m. the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a landing zone assignment on Canal Drive. Upon arrival of Second Assistant Chief Jason Faulkner, it was determined by Sussex County EMS that the patient would not be flown. Firefighters assisted EMS with packaging and loading the patient in the ambulance. Fourteen firefighters were in service for Twenty-three minutes. At 11:52 a.m. the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a child locked in an automobile on Starboard Court in the Rehoboth Shores development. Firefighters utilized a lockout kit to enter the vehicle and free the child. The child was not injured and returned unharmed to her parents. Eighteen firefighters were in service for forty minutes under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Jason Faulkner. At 6:28 p.m. the company was alerted for a brush fire with exposures to a residential structure on Egret Lane in Pot Nets Seaside off Long Neck Road. Upon arrival of our Incident Command, it was identified that a small brush fire was located between three manufactured home residential structures and threatening others nearby. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. It appears that an extension cord, improperly utilized, was connected to outdoor lighting fixtures and appears to be the source of ignition for the fire. Twenty-Six firefighters were in service under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Jason Faulkner for approximately one hour.
