Story
Today, we took the Fifth Grade students from Long Neck Elementary School to the Delaware State Fire School training facility in Georgetown, DE. Five different activities were set up to demonstrate fire safety and what a Fire Company does. Delaware State Fire School Instructor Willie Merchant demonstrated the Fire Safety House. The students learned about fire safety hazards found in most homes. Our Deputy Chief, Steven Deery Jr., demonstrated Emergency Medical Services procedures with the assistance of Ray Collas, Ron Ferraro, and Tony Tobias, all members of our Fire Company. They discussed basic first aid and some more advanced equipment that we use. Each group also helped package a student on a backboard, something we do at most motor vehicle collisions. Members of our Fire Company demonstrated hose practices and gave a tour of our Engine 80-7. Don Ray Sr., Mario Street, Brian Roberts, and Patrick Astrella Jr. assisted at this station. Students learned about the equipment carried on our trucks and handled a hose like the ones we use at fires. Delaware State Fire School Instructor Bonnie Barber demonstrated kitchen fire safety. She also spoke about the need to have working smoke detectors in every house and an escape plan to use when the smoke detectors activate. Delaware State Fire School Instructor Walt Reynolds demonstrated fire behavior in the Smoke House. He explained what is needed to have a fire (fuel, oxygen, and heat). Students observed how a fire spreads by observing a straw fire through a plexiglass window. We served a picnic lunch of mini subs, chips, and juice drinks to students, teachers, and firefighters. It was the perfect finish to a fun day.
