Early Wednesday morning, July 5th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway near Wawa. It was reported to be a two-vehicle collision with heavy damage to both vehicles, occupant entrapment, and a significant debris field. Emergency response apparatus from Indian River included Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility, Ladder 80 and Utility 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional resources were requested from the Millsboro Fire Company for an EMS unit, the Sussex County Paramedic, and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT). Emergency response crew assignments included assistance with patient stabilization, initiate vehicle stabilization in preparation for vehicle extrication, traffic control with complete roadway closure of John J. Williams Highway, fluid and debris recovery, and overall scene mitigation. It appears that a black Chevrolet Suburban and a black Infinity SUV were traveling on John J. Williams Highway when the collided near the intersection of Carillon Square and Shore Plaza Blvd. Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage with significant fluid loss causing the need for a sand truck from DELDOT. All persons requiring emergency medical services were transported to nearby medical facilities in Lewes. The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.
