On Saturday, May 20th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company collaborated with the American Red Cross and the Delaware State Fire School to participate in a nationwide initiative that aims to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries in the U.S. by 25% within five years by performing a door-to-door campaign to test and inspect residential smoke detectors. Working smoke detectors cut the risk of dying in home fires by half! The American Red Cross is working with fire departments and other partners that deploys teams of volunteers into the neighborhood to install free 10-year smoke alarms and replace smoke alarm batteries.
