Early Wednesday morning, March 22nd, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Lewes (82) fire departments were alerted for a structure fire on Cannon Road. It was reported to be barn housing livestock. Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engines #80-3 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police, local emergency medical services provider and the Sussex County Paramedics. Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression and containment activities, water supply, and overhaul. Lewes and Millsboro provided suppression, water supply, and overhaul assistance. It appears that a large pole barn style structure was fully involving upon arrival of emergency response units. The facility housed livestock including multiple horses which perished in the fire. The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating to determine the origin and cause of the incident.
