Nature: Vehicle Accident Possibly Serious

On Sunday, March 12th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Mount Joy Road at the Mother Mary of Peace Church. It was reported to ber a vehicle into the structure.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, debris clean up, structure stability evaluation, and overall scene assessment.

It appears that a parishioner driving a Ford SUV left the parking lot outside of the church and accidentally struck the exterior of the structure causing some structure damage to the facility. It was unknown if any people where in the vicinity of the interior wall at the time of the incident.

The Sussex County Emergency Operations alerted the Sussex County Building Inspectors to evaluate and determine the structural integrity of the building.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
