Story

Indian River Promotes Fire Prevention Week – October 9 thru 16, 2016

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company continues its fire prevention demonstrations and presentations at the Long Neck Elementary School in order to recognize the importance of this initiative.

In order to teach fire safety to children, one must concentrate and emphasize the following:

(1) Firefighters are you friends – Monday, October 10th,

(2) Create an escape plan – Tuesday October 11th,

(3) Practice fire safety skills – every presentation,

(4) Talk about fire prevention – every presentation, and

(5) Plan fire safety activities – every presentation and every day.

Indian River has created an extensive instruction program including an instructional program for each grade level including:

Pre-K and K – Meet your friendly firefighter;

1st Grade – Exit Drills in the House (EDITH);

2nd Grade – Fire Mini-Muster & Fire Truck Demonstration;

3rd Grade – Smoke House Activities;

4th Grade – Fire House Program and Tour; and

5th Grade – Fire School Program and Tour.

This year’s National Fire Prevention Theme is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” which represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety - http://www.irvfc.com/gallery/detail/23158 and http://www.irvfc.com/gallery/detail/23159?ss=1.
