On Sunday evening, August 28th, while the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was mitigating the vehicle accidents on John J. Williams Highway, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center was taking another 9-1-1 incident for an overdue jet skier and child.

Emergency response apparatus from Indian River included Brush #80-0 with 80 Marine 2 and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional assistance from the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2) was utilized as well. 80 Marine 2 launched from the Pot Nets Bayside area and 80 Marine 1 launched from the Massey’s Landing area.

It was reported that a single jet ski with two occupants, a 46 year old female and an eight year child, were overdue from jet skiing within the Indian River Bay between Pot Nets Seaside and Pot Nets Bayside.

The Indian River vessels along with the United States Coast Guard – Indian River Squadron; the Delaware DNREC Marine Police, the Delaware State Police Ground Units, and the Dewey Beach Police Department assisted with the search criteria. Grid patterns were coordinated within the area, while DSP Trooper 2 surveyed the air, the Dewey Beach evaluated facilities along the waterways within their jurisdiction, while the marine units surveyed the waterways.

Shortly thereafter, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center received telephone calls that yells for help could be heard from the Peninsula Fishing Pier areas and dispatched Trooper 2 and 80 Marine 2 to the area.

Immediately, the jet ski and its occupants were located on the fishing pier.

The mariners were transported back to the Pot Nets Bayside area for an observation and evaluation.

Other agencies are continuing their investigation.
