On Saturday evening, January 30th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Layton Davis Road. It was reported to be two vehicles, head-on with possible entrapment. Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Utility 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police, the Sussex County Paramedics, and the Delaware State Police Aviation unit. Emergency response crew assignments included overall incident mitigation activities including but not limited to: patient stabilization, scene stabilization, vehicle stabilization, preparation for vehicle extrication, vehicle extrication, traffic control, landing zoning, and debris and fluid recovery. It appears that a blue GMC pick-up was traveling on Route 24 and a black Ford pick-up was also traveling on Route 24 approaching Layton Davis Road and collided head-on. Both vehicle sustained significant damage required vehicle extrication on the Ford pick-up. The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close John J. Williams Highway down for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Police are investigating. Police say William McGeehan of Laurel was eastbound on Route 24 near Layton Davis Road when he swerved into the westbound lane – colliding with a vehicle driven by a Millsboro woman. Police say this is McGeehan’s 8th DUI arrest – he also faces charges of 2nd degree vehicular assault and several traffic offenses.
