Nature: Vehicle Accident

Location: 30295 Mount Joy Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Tuesday evening, January 12th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Mount Joy Road between Virgie’s Lane and Cordrey Road. It was reported to be a two vehicle collision.

Immediately upon dispatching the incident by the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), additional incident information was received upgrading the incident to a serious motor vehicle collision with possible entrapment.  Multiple Indian River firefighters were immediately nearby and provided responding emergency units with valuable information updates.

Emergency response units from Indian River included: Rescue 80, Chief 80-15, Utility 80-8 from the Oak Orchard area and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional resources from the Delaware Department of Transportation, the Delaware State Police, and the Sussex County Paramedics, including but limited to the DSP Aviation Unit (Trooper #2).

Emergency response crew assignments included overall incident mitigation with the ordering of complete roadway closure of Mount Joy Road between Cannon Road and Cordrey Road, as well preparation for vehicle extrication measures for both vehicles, vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization, traffic control, and scene preservation.

The incident required extensive vehicle extrication measures extended beyond 45 minutes to free the occupant of the Honda sedan.

The Delaware Department of Transportation was required to attend with arrow-boards and light generators for scene lighting and traffic control.

The Delaware State Fire Police assisted with the traffic control measures.

The Delaware State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Team was required to attend the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
