Nature: Delaware Electric Cooperative Provides Assistance to Indian River

On Thursday, December 3rd, the Delaware Electric Cooperative provided assistance to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company as crews from the Cooperative were making plans to converge on Oak Orchard. A monumental task and a day’s effort was on hand for this designated crew.

The primary emergency alert siren for the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was undergoing a comprehensive overhaul including completely newly installed utility poles as well newly constructed platforms, electrical connections, wirings, etc. It is estimated that the original siren installation was in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

The refurbishment tasks seemed simple; however, it was very delicate to orchestrate all activities into a cohesive schedule. With the assistance of the Delaware Electric Cooperative, this phase of digging, erecting, installing, and maneuvering theses large electrical transmission poles into two pilings for the siren platform to be mounted upon was seamless.

It was mid-morning when officers from Indian River received an acknowledgement that Delaware Electric Cooperative would be on-site at approximately 10 a.m. to commence with the designated tasks. Word quickly spread amongst the local volunteer firefighters that participated on this project became curious and wanted to monitor the day’s events. These gentlemen watched approvingly as the skilled Co-op crews maneuvered the huge transmission poles from laying on the ground to two large pilings tightly squeezed between a concrete pad and old storage building. This feat and conversation about the skillfulness of the crews was even more so impressive to those who then watched the crews work.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative was obliged to assist the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company with this endeavor.
