Vehicle Accident ALS

Address: Harbeson Rd & Forest Rd., Harbeson, DE 19951

On Sunday evening, Octoober 18th, the Georgetown (77) and Indian River (80) volunteer fire companies were alerted to assist the Milton (85) with motor vehicle accident on Harbeson Road (State Route #5), north of Forest Road. It was reported to be a two vehicle collision with multiple entrapment. Both companies were requested to provide a rescue assist assignment.

Emergency response units from Indian River include Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional resources from the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2), the Delaware Department of Transportation, the Sussex County Paramedics, and other nearby emergency medical personnel also responded for assistance.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization and extrication of the occupant of the silver vehicle off the shoulder of the roadway.

It appears that a blue Mercury sedan was traveling north on Harbeson Road and collided with a southbound silver Mazada. Both vehicles suffered significant front-end and driver’s side damage with all drivers trapped in their respective vehicle. Both vehicles required roof removal techniques in order to extricate the occupants.

This segment of Harbeson Road will be closed for the duration pending an on-going investigation by the Delaware State Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit.

The Delaware State Fire Police were requested to close the roadway in both northbound and southbound traffic patterns.

A head-on crash just after 7 p.m. on Harbeson Road has left a Milton man – and his dog, dead. Delaware State Police say 34 year old Gianfranco Carta of Milton was northbound on Harbeson Road, 49 year old Paula Pennington of Wilmington was southbound when Carta’s car drifted into the southbound lane and struck the other car nearly head on. Both drivers were trapped in their cars – Carta was not properly restrained and was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced dead – a dog in his vehicle also died in the crash. Pennington was properly restrained and was taken to Beebe Healthcare with non-life threatening injuries. Police have been told by witnesses that Carta may not have had his headlights on before the crash.
