State police are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicycle on Pot-Nets Road near Long Neck Friday night.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at about 7:50 p.m. for the crash between a vehicle and a bicyclist, Sgt. Richard Bratz said.

Charles D. Jones Jr., 46, of Millsboro, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet Corvette southbound on Pot-Nets Road, at an "apparent high rate of speed" south of Long Neck Road, police said.

At that time, Lynn T. Bemiller III, 20, of Millsboro was attempting to cross Pot-Nets Road on bicycle when Jones failed to see him crossing the road.

The front bumper of the Corvette struck the left side of the bicycle, forcing Bemiller up on the front windshield before landing on the east side of the roadway.

Bratz said Jones was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and drove off to the west side of the road, striking a large tree before coming to a stop.

Bemiller, who was not wearing a helmet or reflective clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones and his passenger, Sean M. French, 39, of Millsboro, were both properly restrained and transported to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes before both were airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where they were admitted with undetermined injuries, Bratz said.

The state Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate this incident. Police said alcohol and speed may have been contributing factors on the part of Jones.

Pot-Nets Road was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
