Nature: 9/11 Memorial Truck – Delaware Unveiling

On Saturday, July 16th, the American Legion Post #28 sponsored the unveiling of the 9/11 Memorial in the State of Delaware for the first time.

This event was the milestone of many months of planning and discussion which resulted in a Memorial Procession from the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes, Delaware to the American Legion Post #28 off of John J. Williams Highway in Millsboro.

The cap stone was the arrival of the 9/11 Memorial Truck at Post #28 and the commencement of the Annual American Legion Car Show.

The 9/11 Memorial Truck represents the memory of the 343 firefighters from FDNY; the 37 Port Authority Police Officers from New York; and the 23 Police Officers of NYPD that perished on this fateful day of September 11, 2001.

The Processional Route was from the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal via Kings Highway to State Route #1 (Coastal Highway) to Route #24 (John J. Williams Highway) to Legion Road (Post #28). This included a Delaware State Police escort with approximately 175 motorcyclists; and approximately 18 fire companies from throughout the State of Delaware and various ancillary organizations such as: Delaware State Fire Police, Lewes Fire Department Motorcycle Fire Police Unit, Sussex County Fire Chief’s Association, Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association, American Legion Riders of various states & chapters, and Red Knights, etc.

The fire company trophies for oldest pumper / engine went to Rehoboth Beach Fire Company; and the best appearing fire engine went to Clayton Fire Company.

National 9/11 Memorial Truck stops at American Legion Post #28

Hundreds came out to American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard for their eighth annual car show today. In addition to the myriad of hot rods, motorcycles, tractors and vintage police cars and fire trucks, the biggest attraction was the National 9/11 Memorial truck, which is touring the country ahead of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The doors of the truck are adorned with the names of the 432 FDNY firefighters, NYPD and Port Authority police officers, paramedics and K-9s who died when the World Trade Center collapsed. The specially-made American flag bears the names of the approximately 3,000 victims of the terrorist attacks in the stripes. Many people stopped to look over and take pictures of the truck, which will be back at Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center stood, this coming September 11, 2011.
