On Sunday evening, July 10th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an outside fire, nature unknown in the Rehoboth Shores development off of Long Neck Road.

Emergency response units were able to determine heavy smoke in the area and additional reports indicated this incident may involve some type of marsh fire.

Brush Unit #80-0 responded with Apparatus Officer Ryan Mock who provided directions to the incident location and a brief synopsis of the incident – marsh fire, heavy smoke, access limited to brush type vehicles.

Engine #80-3 was able to gain access to the entrance way leading up towards the marsh area but that was limited for heavy apparatus and engine type vehicle. Incident Command Brian Morley was able to establish an observation point and directed all responding apparatus to the staging area. Brush #80-00 was permitted access to the marsh via the aforementioned entrance trails.

Initial access to any entrance was prohibited by locked access gates. Brush #80-0 and Engine #80-1 had to open this access points with manual intervention. Engine #80-1; Engine #80-2; Engine #80-5 and Tanker 80 were held at the staging area.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to limit access to the area including closing segments of the paved roadway to curious neighborhood residents.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal was in the area and able to respond and is investigating.

An overall incident synopsis includes approximately a 1.5 acre of marsh land was involved in the fire and origin of the fire is unknown.

The initial knock-out was instrumental in controlling the spread of the fire. A fire suppressant compound (wet water) was added to the brush trucks to assist with the extinquishment.
