1953 Indian River Notable Apparatus Purchases
In April 1953, the Indian River VFC approved the acquisition of a 1946 Dodge from C.D. Sapp Truck to operate as a water wagon with the water tank being purchased from Pure Oil Company for $1. The cost of the truck is believed to be $50. This was the first piece of apparatus acquired by the newly formed fire company. Truck #1 – 1946 Dodge Water Wagon (purchased April, 1953) - $50 Truck #2 – 1926 Reo Fire Truck (purchased May, 1953) - $2 This truck was acquired from the Rehoboth Beach VFC Truck #3 – 1942 Chevrolet Truck (purchased August 1953) - $300 down - $35 mth – 30 months - $1,350 Truck #4 – 1939 GMC (purchased February, 1955) - $1,250 Truck #5 – 1960 GMC Series B Cab - $16,500 - http://www.irvfc.com/apparatus/detail/4646 Truck #6 – 1954 Ford 900 5 Series - 5000-gallon tanker (purchased 1963) In 1963, Lee Rust located a tractor trailer with a 5000-gallon tank and inquired with the membership as to acquire the vehicle or not. After much discussion, the tractor trailer was purchased. Many of the firemen felt that none of the volunteers could back the unit into the firehouse and believed there was insufficient space. This vehicle was a 1954 Ford 900 Series. |
